AZ Hemorrhoids Center Q & A
What are the different types of hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids develop when veins around your anus become inflamed and swollen. As the veins enlarge, two possible types of hemorrhoids develop:
- Internal hemorrhoids, which form in the lining of the anus and lower rectum
- External hemorrhoids, which develop under the skin around your anus
Hemorrhoids most often occur in patients between the ages of 45-65.
What causes hemorrhoids?
The veins that form hemorrhoids stretch and enlarge when they’re exposed to unusual pressure. This type of pressure may come from:
- Sitting on the toilet for a long time
- Chronic constipation or diarrhea
- Frequently lifting heavy objects
Hemorrhoids are also common during pregnancy, where they’re caused by pressure from the weight of the baby, or they occur during delivery.
What symptoms develop due to hemorrhoids?
Internal hemorrhoids cause bleeding, which appears as bright red blood on toilet paper or in the toilet bowl. This type of hemorrhoid can become prolapsed if it’s pushed through the anus when you strain during bowel movements. An internal hemorrhoid may become painful after it prolapses.
External hemorrhoids cause symptoms such as pain and itching. You may also feel a tender lump near your anus or develop pain after sitting for an extended length of time. If you experience sudden, severe pain, the hemorrhoid has thrombosed, meaning it has developed a blood clot.
How are hemorrhoids treated?
The doctors at Sonoran Surgical are experts in the nonsurgical and surgical treatment of hemorrhoids. For mild hemorrhoids, your doctor may recommend changes in your diet and bathroom habits.
When conservative treatments fail to provide relief, or when you have a thrombosed hemorrhoid, they recommend one of several surgical interventions:
Elastic band ligation
Dr. Sahai places an elastic band around the base of the hemorrhoid. As the band cuts off the blood supply, the hemorrhoid dies and shrinks.
Infrared coagulation
The heat from an infrared light blocks the blood supply to internal hemorrhoids. As a result, the hemorrhoid dies and a scar forms that holds the veins in place.
Stapled hemorrhoidectomy
During a procedure for prolapsing hemorrhoids (PPH), Dr. Sahai uses a circular stapling device to remove hemorrhoids and restore the remaining tissues to their normal position
Excisional hemorrhoidectomy
This is surgery to remove internal or external hemorrhoids.
